Print & production checklist
The inputs needed for usable production files and a clean handoff.
Before design begins
Provide the printer or fabricator’s template, final trim size, stock or material, print method, quantity of versions, fold or finishing details, and required file standard. Supply approved copy and original high-resolution assets. Tell me if you need a digital version as well.
Bleed, safe areas & color
Bleed extends artwork beyond the cut edge; safe margins keep important content away from trimming and folds. Exact values, color space, and ICC profile follow the supplier’s specification. Common small-format starting points are 3 mm or 0.125 in bleed and approximately 300 ppi imagery at final size, but these are not universal settings.
Large format & special finishes
Large-format graphics can use different resolution targets, scale factors, and finishing allowances. White ink, metallic colors, foil, die cuts, embroidery, and other special processes need explicit supplier instructions. They are not inferred from a visual mockup.
Proofing & sign-off
You approve spelling, prices, contact details, supplied claims, and final content. The printer or fabricator confirms the file is suitable for its equipment and materials before production. A physical proof is the best way to assess color-critical output; monitor previews cannot guarantee a printed match.
Additional versions
Agree quantities of sizes, languages, SKUs, pages, and placements in the brief. Each adaptation takes work. New copy after approval, a new printer template, or a different production process can require another request and revised timing.
